About

Hawa Mahal

An iconic five-story pink sandstone structure with 953 intricately carved windows (jharokhas), Hawa Mahal is one of Jaipur's most photographed landmarks.

Built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, Hawa Mahal was designed by architect Lal Chand Ustad. The palace was constructed to allow royal ladies to observe street festivals and daily life without being seen, following the purdah system of the time. Its unique honeycomb design allows cool air to circulate — hence the name 'Palace of Winds'.
